The goal was to create an animal form using simplified, geometric shapes, which communicates the inherent physical and intangible characteristics of the animal using basic elements of form. The animal form would then be incorporated into a larger typographic composition.
Initial Research
The first step of the process was to find examples of the creature to base my design on. Images were collected which outlined the most important characteristics of the animal, such as the lion's mane, snout, and general large figure.
Handmade Sketches
After the research was finished, a variety of sketches were made to grasp the form of the lion. A focus was placed on capturing the energy associated with a lion in the wild. Sketches were initially created with pencil, with later versions being made with sharpie.
Digital Iterations
The handmade sketches were then used to create digital ideations in Adobe Illustrator.
Final Mark
The final mark draws attention to the lion's face, as it is a symbol which represents the immense power and presence of a lion in the wild.
Typographic Experimentation
The final step of the process was to add the creature mark into a typographic composition, incorporating a poetic phrase about the animal. The chosen phrase was:
The beast lurks in the shadows, waiting patiently for the king's next royal meal.
