The objective was the creation of a cube, containing 6 individual designs which illustrate the inherent forces present within a square, with each side also connecting to one another through the same illustrated forces. A color harmony was to be added to reinforce the designs created by the shapes, as well as to create new relationships not previously available with only black and white.
Initial Handmade Sketches
The first step of the process was to experiment with handmade sketches of individual sides. An emphasis was placed on creating a dominant axis for each design, influencing the placement of the other elements of the design. Initially, I experimented with a diagonal axis, but chose not to move forward with this later into the process.
Digital Experimentation
The next step was to utilize the designs created by hand to make new iterations digitally within Adobe Illustrator. It was during this phase of experimentation my designs moved towards a horizontal/vertical axis.
First Cube Prototypes
The next step was to begin experimenting with designs that were connected with each other, moving towards the creation of the cube.
Addition of Color
After a basic design was selected, the next step was to move forward with the addition of a color harmony.
Finalized Designs
After deciding on a color harmony, one more round of feedback was given to make changes to the layout with the addition of color. This culminated in the creation of two cubes: one with color, and one without.
3D Rendering
After the completion of the cube's design, students were tasked with the creation of a digital 3D model of the cube through the use of Adobe Dimension. A link was created so that the model could be rendered and viewed online:
